PIOD - Engagement Reflection & Connections

Engagement Reflection

Question 1 2 3 4
How actively did you engage in assembling the mission statement? I was mostly passive and observed others. I contributed occasionally but was not very engaged. I participated actively by sharing ideas and working with my group. I was fully engaged, helping to organise and encourage discussion.
Did you take the initiative to guide or support your group's progress? I waited for others to take the lead. I contributed when asked but did not take the lead. I helped organise and guide the discussion. I took a leadership role in ensuring the group completed the task.
How invested were you in the activity beyond just completing the task? I focused only on finishing without much interest. I was engaged but didn't reflect much on the mission statement's meaning. I considered the mission statement's relevance to my role as a mentor. I was highly invested in discussing connections and encouraging others to reflect.

PIOD Connections

5/2025

PIOD complements and enhances existing models and frameworks used in Tanzania. PIOD is closely aligned with:

  1. OE's guiding principles
  2. The Essential Habits, and
  3. The 5 E Learning model

PIOD - Guiding Principles - Essential Habits

PIOD provides the progression pathway for student engagement, showing the journey from basic participation to self-directed learning. The Guiding Principles establish the philosophical foundation that justifies why this progression matters. The Essential Habits deliver many of the practical skills and mindsets students need to advance along the continuum.

1. Active Engagement

  • PIOD shows what engagement looks like at each level
  • Guiding Principle #1 ("Learning Requires Action") explains why active engagement is necessary
  • Essential Habits like "Be Curious" and "Manage Yourself" provide the tools to take action

2. Growth Through Practice

  • PIOD's progression shows increasing mastery
  • Guiding Principle #2 ("Learning Improves with Practice") establishes the importance of consistent effort
  • Essential Habits like "Learn From Setbacks" develop the resilience needed for sustained practice

3. Collaborative Learning

  • PIOD's investing stage includes participating in discussions, Driving stage includes collaborative behaviors
  • Guiding Principle #3 ("We Learn Better Together") validates the social nature of learning
  • Essential Habits like "Communicate and Collaborate" build the interpersonal skills needed

4. Lifelong Learning Context

  • PIOD applies to all learning contexts. Also applies to owning and driving your future and forging your path forward.
  • Guiding Principle #4 ("Learning Happens Everywhere") expands learning beyond classrooms
  • Essential Habits #6 ("Live an Integrated Life") helps students connect learning across contexts

5. Personal Development

  • PIOD's progression culminates in self-directed learning
  • Guiding Principle #5 ("Learning Drives Personal Growth") establishes why ownership and lifelong learning matter
  • Essential Habits enable the autonomy needed for personal growth.

One potential gap with the Essential Habits is the skills students need to learn how to reflect on the meaning of what they are learning and experiencing, their values, purpose, interests, desires, strengths, and limitations. They must learn how to identify goals, take action, and monitor progress. These skills could easily fit under Manage Yourself.

Together, these frameworks create a comprehensive approach where:

  • PIOD provides the what (observable behaviors at each stage)
  • Guiding Principles explain the why (philosophical rationale)
  • Essential Habits deliver the how (practical skills and mindsets)

This alignment ensures students not only progress through increasing levels of engagement but also understand the purpose behind their learning journey and develop the specific competencies needed for success.

PIOD and the 5 E Learning Model

The PIOD framework and 5E model complement each other, but have different purposes:

5E Model: Provides a specific instructional sequence for lesson design. Typically operates within a single lesson or unit cycle.

PIOD: Offers a broader engagement continuum for designing programs, courses, units, and lessons. Lessons will typically focus on just one stage within PIOD. PIOD represents longer-term development across many learning experiences. It's useful for reflecting on and tracking student engagement and development over time.

Students experience multiple SE cycles as they advance through the PIOD stages.

Both frameworks:

  • Recognise initial engagement as essential to learning
  • Emphasise active involvement in the learning process
  • Focus on making meaning from experiences
  • Emphasise application and extension of learning
  • Value reflection and application of learning
